VAR.P
VAR.P(range) is the average squared distance from the mean when your data is the entire population. Worked examples, and when VAR.S is the right one. Matches Excel.
Syntax
VAR.P(number1, [number2], ...) | Argument | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
number1 | Required | A range or value. |
number2 | Optional | Further ranges or values. |
Examples
Every example below was executed against VisiGrid engine 0.54.0 — not
transcribed from another vendor's documentation. Reproduce any of them with vgrid calc.
| Formula | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
=VAR.P(A2:A9) | 4 | The mean is 5; the squared distances from it sum to 32; 32 / 8 = 4. |
=STDEV.P(A2:A9)^2 | 4 | |
=VAR.P(5) | 0 |
The plain definition
VAR.P is variance exactly as it is defined: the average of the squared
distances from the mean. Nothing is estimated, so use it only when the data is
the complete population. For a sample, VAR.S corrects
for the bias of estimating from part of the group.
VARP is the pre-2010 name for the same function.
Excel compatibility
Matches Excel, including skipping text and logical values in ranges.
