TRANSPOSE
Turn a row into a column, or a table on its side, with a formula that stays linked to the source.
Syntax
TRANSPOSE(array) | Argument | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
array | Required | The range to flip. |
Examples
Every example below was executed against VisiGrid engine 0.54.0 — not
transcribed from another vendor's documentation. Reproduce any of them with vgrid calc.
| Formula | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
=D3 | Jan | TRANSPOSE(A1:C2) in D3 turns the 2-by-3 block into 3-by-2, spilling into D3:E5. |
=D5 | Mar | |
=E4 | 30 | |
=E5 | 0 | A blank source cell comes through as 0, as in Excel. |
Linked, not copied
Paste Special’s transpose makes a one-off copy. TRANSPOSE stays connected to
the source, so the flipped table updates when the original changes — useful for
showing a row of monthly figures as a column beside other columns.
Blanks become 0
Like Excel, TRANSPOSE shows an empty source cell as 0. Where that matters,
wrap the source in an IF in a helper range, or leave the cell with empty text
instead.
Excel compatibility
Matches Excel, including blank cells becoming 0.
