RADIANS
RADIANS(angle) turns degrees into radians, which SIN, COS and TAN require: =SIN(RADIANS(30)) is 0.5. Worked examples both ways. Matches Excel.
Syntax
RADIANS(angle) | Argument | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
angle | Required | An angle in degrees. |
Examples
Every example below was executed against VisiGrid engine 0.54.0 — not
transcribed from another vendor's documentation. Reproduce any of them with vgrid calc.
| Formula | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
=RADIANS(180) | 3.14 | Half a turn is π radians. |
=SIN(RADIANS(30)) | 0.50 | Convert on the way in, and SIN gets the angle it expects. |
=RADIANS(360)=2*PI() | TRUE |
Why the conversion is needed
SIN, COS and TAN
measure angles in radians, where a full turn is 2π rather than 360. Handing them
degrees is not an error — it is a different angle — so the mistake produces a
confident wrong number. Wrap any angle a person typed in degrees:
=COS(RADIANS(60)) → 0.50
It is exactly angle*PI()/180. The reverse conversion is
DEGREES.
