NORMSDIST
The pre-2010 name for the cumulative form of NORM.S.DIST — the probability that a standard normal value falls at or below z.
Syntax
NORMSDIST(z) | Argument | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
z | Required | The value, in standard deviations from the mean. |
Examples
Every example below was executed against VisiGrid engine 0.54.0 — not
transcribed from another vendor's documentation. Reproduce any of them with vgrid calc.
| Formula | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
=NORMSDIST(0) | 0.50 | |
=NORMSDIST(1.96) | 0.98 | |
=NORMSDIST(1.96)=NORM.S.DIST(1.96,TRUE) | TRUE | Always the cumulative probability — there is no density form. |
Use NORM.S.DIST in new work
NORMSDIST takes only z and always returns the cumulative probability. Its
replacement, NORM.S.DIST, adds a second argument
to choose between the cumulative probability and the density, and makes the
choice visible in the formula. NORMSDIST stays so older workbooks open
unchanged.
Excel compatibility
Matches Excel to about seven decimal places, like NORM.S.DIST.
