FLOOR
Round a number down to the nearest multiple of a given significance — the 0.05 below, the 5 below, the last full crate.
Syntax
FLOOR(number, [significance]) | Argument | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
number | Required | The number to round. |
significance | Optional | The multiple to round down to. Defaults to 1 here; Excel requires it. |
Examples
Every example below was executed against VisiGrid engine 0.54.0 — not
transcribed from another vendor's documentation. Reproduce any of them with vgrid calc.
| Formula | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
=FLOOR(A2,0.05) | 3.40 | Down to the 5 cents below. |
=FLOOR(12,5) | 10 | |
=FLOOR(-2.5,2) | -4 | A negative number with a positive significance rounds away from zero. |
=FLOOR(-2.5,-2) | -2 | With both negative, it rounds towards zero. |
=FLOOR(4.2,0) | #DIV/0! |
Complete units only
FLOOR is for counting what is fully there: full cases from a stock of loose
items, whole 15-minute blocks worked, the price band a value falls into.
=FLOOR(47,12) → 36
— 47 items make 36 in full dozens, three dozen boxes.
Grouping into bands
Rounding down to a multiple puts values into equal bands — ages into decades,
amounts into 100-wide buckets — ready for COUNTIF or a
pivot:
=FLOOR(37,10) → 30
Differences from Excel
The sign rules match: a zero significance is #DIV/0! and a positive number
with a negative significance is #NUM!. The only difference is that the
significance may be left out here, defaulting to 1; Excel requires it.
Excel compatibility
Matches Excel's FLOOR, including its sign rules and #DIV/0! for a zero significance. The significance is optional here (defaulting to 1); Excel requires it.
