License

VisiGrid is open source software. Here's how the licensing works.

Open Source License

VisiGrid is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPLv3). This means you can:
  • Use VisiGrid freely for any purpose
  • View, modify, and distribute the source code
  • Build and distribute your own versions
With one key requirement: if you modify VisiGrid and make it available over a network (e.g., as a hosted service), you must release your modifications under the same license. This protects the open-source ecosystem while ensuring VisiGrid remains free for individual users, researchers, and open-source projects.

Plugin Exception

Plugins that use only the documented public plugin API are not considered derivative works and may be licensed independently. This means you can create proprietary plugins for VisiGrid without being required to open-source them, as long as they interact with VisiGrid solely through the public API. What's allowed:
  • Proprietary plugins using the public plugin API
  • Commercial plugins sold independently
  • Internal plugins for your organization
What requires AGPLv3:
  • Modifications to VisiGrid's core source code
  • Plugins that link against private/internal modules
  • Forks or derivatives of the core engine

Commercial Licensing

If the AGPLv3 doesn't work for your use case, commercial licenses are available. You may need a commercial license if you want to:
  • Embed VisiGrid in proprietary software
  • Host VisiGrid as a service without releasing your source code
  • Distribute modified versions in closed-source products
  • Use VisiGrid in environments where AGPLv3 is not permitted
Commercial licenses are offered by RegAtlas, LLC, the company behind VisiGrid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use VisiGrid for free in my company?

Yes. Using VisiGrid internally (on your own machines, not as a hosted service for others) is completely free under the AGPLv3.

Do I need a commercial license for my plugin?

No, as long as your plugin only uses the public plugin API. Proprietary plugins are explicitly permitted.

What if I host VisiGrid for my team?

Internal hosting for your own organization is fine. Commercial licensing applies when you offer VisiGrid as a service to external users.

Can I fork VisiGrid and sell it?

You can fork and sell it, but your fork must also be AGPLv3 and you must provide the source code. For a proprietary fork, contact us for commercial licensing.
